May News |
May has been a busy month with Yearle Tamworths. Lots of new piglets, pigkeeping courses and learning a new skill!
Back in the snow I lost 2 litters of piglets when 2 sows aborted - as a result I have had a big gap in my farrowing pattern. This has been very annoying as customers are having to wait a long time for their weaners to buy. However I have had 10 litters born during April and May so I should be catching up again soon. As usual I have more people wanting gilts than boars and as usual I have had more boars than gilts born! So, to remedy this problem I have for the first time castrated the boars. This involved the vet coming to teach me what to do - it is quite a simple procedure. The vet demonstrated on 2 piglets and then I did another 12. So I now feel quite happy I can do this job by myself. I also held another pig course - another great group of people, who I think will go on to have their own pig enterprises. I am still working out details of a future pig butchery courses with my butchers - hopefully details will follow very soon. |
